Children's Harvest Luncheon

Every year, on the Friday before Thanksgiving, the school holds a special potluck lunch for the children.  Parents bring an amazing variety of food, and volunteers set it all out in the gym.  The children file through, one class at a time, and with help from parents, fill their plates.  Elementary students help them carry their meal back to their classroom, where they eat with their friends.

As usual this year, it was an occasion thoroughly enjoyed by all.

WMS Kilometre Club Runs 1,000 Kilometres!

This particular story started last year.  AS 2007 marked the 100th year of Montessori Education, many schools held special events or activities to celebrate.  Around the world, for example, different schools participated in walking "100 steps for Montessori."  That gave us an idea:  perhaps our students could run 100 kilometres over the course of the fall!

Happily, the perimeter of our playground measures 100 metres.  Students were encouraged to run (or walk) around the playground at lunch time.  Each circuit would be recorded, and one "toe token" (a small colourful foot strung on a chain) would be awarded for every 5 kilometres run (that's 50 times around the playground!)  The children were so keen that they ran over 100 kilometres in the first few weeks!  With their approval, we raised the bar, and the target became 1000 kilometres.

Students could check their individual and collective progress weekly on graphs posted in the hallway.  Winter brought a hiatus (it was just too hard to run in snow pants and winter boots) but as soon as the snow was gone we started up again.  The enthusiasm was rekindled.

On Tuesday, April 29, the students reached their goal.  The local paper, The Flamborough Review, was present to mark the occasion.  Together the children ran the last kilometre, as staff counted down the ten laps and cheered them on.  They have now run over 10,000 times around the playground!  Even before the reporter had finished, the children were asking if they could running.  The answer, of course, was yes.  So off they went.  In the words of an enthusiastic 4 year old, "We've run 1000 kilometres - now we can run one million!"  Well, maybe not quite, but it doesn't hurt to dream big!

There have been some amazing accomplishments, from a 3 year old earning 3 toe tokens (meaning he has run 15 kilometres) to our most dedicated runner, 7-year-old David, who has run 100 kilometres, and is still going!

Flip Into Spring Pancake Breakfast
It was Miss Kathy's turn to host our third Pancake Breakfast of the year!  Large red tulips bloomed on the gym walls, surrounded by bees and butterflies.  Raffle baskets and crafts were a hit, and this time a bake sale added to the excitement.  Over $900 was raised; Miss Kathy will be able to purchase everything on her wish list!

Valentine's Family Party

On Saturday, February 16, Waterdown Montessori School held our annual Valentine's Family Party at the Waterdown Legion.  As usual, the event was very well attended.  There was something for everyone:  dinner catered by Boston Pizza, both a Silent and a Live Auction, games for the children, classroom theme basket raffles, our marvellous DJ Owen, and even a magician!  This was truly a family event, attended by the youngest babes in arms, to many grandparents.

Thank you to the hard-working committee, the many sponsors and donors of auction items, the elementary class for the wonderful decorations, and to all who attended.

Pancake Breakfast with Santa

Mrs. Barbara's Elementary class hosted our second Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, December 2. This time the children acted as Santa's elves, wearing elf hats, and aprons created by Meagan's mom.  Our special guest was Santa himself!  Children were able to have their picture taken sitting on his lap.  Thanks to Steven for taking all the pictures!  The whole school was filled with the magic of Christmas.

The final tally is not yet in, but we certainly raised as much as the first time.  We are all looking forward to the next special breakfast.

Halloween Pancake Breakfast

Our first ever Pancake Breakfast was an unqualified success! Ms. Wyn’s class hosted the event on Sunday, October 28. Parents provided all the supplies. The children wore aprons and helped pour and serve. The gym was decorated with a Halloween theme, and was filled with families relaxing with each other and friends. We would like to thank all the parents who helped out, with a special thank you to Clarissa’s mom, who added many extra touches, including the huge raffle basket!

Ms. Wyn will definitely be able to purchase a math shelf with the proceeds: $583 in ticket sales, and $115 in raffle tickets for a grand total of $698! Amazing!
